Last night I changed out the gear oil in my differential. I was supposed to do it at 30,000 miles but i have waited until now at 37,000 miles because I hate the smell of SAE 75 oil...It is one of the most atrocious smells!
Besides that lingerings smell of gear oil on my hands, everything looks good despite driving through deep water without a diff breather a year ago. Also no large chunks of metal on the drain plug magnet so I’m happy
Next up are the transfer case and the front diff...not looking forward to the smell!

Gear oil’s the worst and it only gets worse as it ages.

I think the worst would have been when our assistant manager knocked over the entire drum when our pit guy was at the other end of the bay. He told noone. About ten gallons all over a pit we had literally just cleaned the day before.
Both the pit man and I where ready to kill him and the shop smelled like geardo for a month.

It’s like the smell sticks to you... even when you do not get any on you at all.

I actually kind of like it, as long as I’m not around it every day. There’s something evocative of heavy machinery that gets me excited like a little kid. Smell is the sense most closely linked with memory and emotion.

I don’t mind it at all, but it seems like a common thing for people to hate that smell.

I remember watching a NASCAR race once and hearing Darrel Waltrip say that burning gear oil is the worst smell in the world. I tend to agree with him.

Ac delco makes grape scented gear oil.

For me it’s tires. My grandfather and my dad owned a tire and repair shop when I was a child. Played hide and seek amongst the stacks of tires every time I was there.

I’m weird I love the smell of mechanical fluids and oils. I grew up on the flightline at El Toro Marine Air base in the FA-18 hydraulics and avionics shop watching my dad wrench on the first squadron of FA-18s. That sent of hydraulic fluid and oil has stcuk with me these 29 years.

I’m trying to decide if that would be worse after sigging in a diff for a couple of decades or not...

Yup, hate it. I don’t mind the smell of any other fluids, but gear oil is terrible. Also, I don’t mind most fluids on my hands, but brake fluid is the worst. I hate touching brake fluid.

Gear oil is terrible. I have a habit of forgetting to drain diffs before splitting them open which results in a large puddle of the stuff spilling onto my garage floor.
Nasty.

holy crap I hate the smell of gear oil SO much. I still have the T-case and rear diff to do (and the front as well, now that I think about it). I’m thinking I might take up that offer of Nates to have the truck baselined.

I know that smell, too. It does reek.

The grape scent does nothing!!!

On grew up on a farm and I always drove this loader where I worked at in high school. The thing leaked hydraulic fluid. I had to add about a gallon every couple hours. It pissed me off that my boss never took the time to fix it. Anyways that smell and diesel, I have never forgotten

Never heard it called that but it includes an auto transmission fluid change then it would be worth it.

Im thinking about it. Hate doing fluid changes.

Try dealing with thay crap when you have to reseal a rear in an 18 wheeler, gallons of that crap to drain on 500xxx mile vehicle, with oil that has never been changed.

I agree! Changed out gear oil in an old defender once (literally chunks of gears in there, hadn’t been changed for years!) it smelled DISGUSTING! Even new I would not choose the smell but at least it doesn’t make me gag.

Burnt or old gear oil is miserable. While I was a shock tech for a while I found that I hated burnt shock oil even more. The room fills with a rotten egg type smell.
On the other hand my favorite smell as a kid was the smell of burnt 2 stroke oil. Specifically Maxima Super M. That stuff smell like freedom.
